Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! | November 29, 2021

Fresh & Local:

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday!

Currently, New Orleans is facing some of the highest levels of food insecurity in the country, especially for children, and Market Umbrella is on the front line of putting fresh vegetables and fruit on the family dinner table with programs like Market Match, which offers a dollar for dollar match for SNAP shoppers to use at markets and with our partners, doubling the amount of money participants can spend on food. Thank you for your continued support of Market Umbrella and for supporting everyone in our community having more access to fresh, local food!

Join us in celebrating Giving Tuesday tomorrow, November 30 - this national day for generosity is the perfect opportunity to make your year-end gift to support the markets and programs you love! Visit our website or text CCFM to 44-321 to donate.

Or, come visit us tomorrow at the Tuesday Market from 8 am to 12 pm at Uptown Square, 200 Broadway Street at the River and make a donation at our Giving Tuesday tent. People who donate at the market tomorrow will get one of our new orange I HEART LOCAL FOOD yard signs, so you can show your CCFM pride to everyone on your block!

Happy Hanukkah

Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days when the Maccabees defeated the Syrian-Greek army and re-dedicated the holy temple in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago. Traditionally, latkes are fried potato pancakes eaten to remember the oil miracle in the Hanukkah story. If you find yourself tiring of your Bubbe’s recipe, fear not, there are many latke variations to try. Check out our sweet potato latkes recipe of the week below or get inspired when you shop with us at the market…spaghetti squash, beets, carrots, and so much more are in season, and all lend themselves beautifully to becoming delicious latkes!

A special night market experience: Supernova!

On December 9th, the Friends of the Lafitte Greenway will be hosting a free outdoor light exhibition and art market alongside our Thursday Mid City Farmers Market. We will be extending our normal Thursday Market hours to 3 - 9 pm so that you can shop with our vendors while enjoying the different illuminated art pieces scattered throughout the market space. You can grab a bite from one of our vendors like Paella NOLA, Friend’s Seafood, or crab cakes from Know Dat Grow Dat and head over to the stage to enjoy the live music from musicians like Shannon Powell, Mahmoud Chouki, Martin Masakowski, and Pedro Segundo. This is part of the three-day Supernova event on the Lafitte Greenway from December 9-11. For more details head over to lafittegreenway.org/supernova.

Vendor of the Week:

Honest Foods Co.

What started as a way to enjoy fresh European style breads when the corner store shut down, has turned into a full blown bakery operation. Irina Kagan, the baker behind shopper favorites like the olive oil loaf and a brand new cinnamon brioche bun, didn’t realize that her affinity for cooking carried over into the sphere of baked goods. It has been four years since she baked her first loaf, and Honest Foods Co. has only been growing since then. Irina and Vlad, together going on twenty-three years, are the dynamic duo that have been bringing hot, fresh bread to CCFM markets since 2019. It’s an around-the-clock job; for morning markets, the two of them head to the shop at around 7pm the previous night and stay through until the start the next morning. Bread is never baked ahead of time and always arrives warm. A majority of their items are vegan, and none of the breads contain sugar--sweetness is added in the form of honey from their hives. A favorite item of Irina’s is her soft, flaky challah bread that pulls apart in a satisfying, melt-in-your-mouth way. Keep an eye out for these delicious baked goods and other fun seasonal items from Honest Foods Company at our Tuesday and Thursday markets.
