Honoring National Womens’ History Month

March is Women’s History Month, an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Women play a significant role in agriculture and food production throughout history and today. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), women produce between 60 and 80 percent of the food in most developing countries. As of 2019, more than half of all farming operations in the United States had at least one woman operator. At the CCFM, you’ll find many women-owned businesses and food producer families represented by women at market. We’ll be highlighting these vendors in our newsletters throughout the month.

We want to take the time to recognize the important contributions of women in agriculture within our local food sector. In addition to spotlighting food producers who are women, we’ll also highlight women on the Market Umbrella team working in other areas of the food system. We’re excited to celebrate Womens’ History Month with you!

Daylight Savings Returns!

It’s almost time to spring forward! Daylight Savings returns on Sunday, March 12th – the following Thursday, we’re lifting our winter hours. Beginning March 16th, the hours of the Thursday Mid-City market return to 3 pm to 7 pm. Make up for the hour you’ll lose on Sunday by taking advantage of our extended hours on Thursday. With longer days and warmer weather, we’re excited to spend more time at market!

Save the Date for Moonlight Market!

On April 20th, Market Umbrella will host our first fundraising event since the pandemic! Moonlight Market is a new take on a much-loved event we hosted in the past where we invite New Orleans' finest pop-ups and restaurants to create and serve one-of-a-kind dishes using fresh, local ingredients just like you'd find at market! Speaking of market, this event takes place right alongside the Thursday Mid-City farmers market where you can connect directly with local food producers and community partners. Parking Reminders

At Crescent City Farmers Market, we are excited to welcome visitors to our markets! We want to create a safe and seamless experience for market participants and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods! We encourage visitors to observe the parking options and restrictions of each market. At our Thursday Mid-City Market, this includes no parking on the uptown side of Lafitte Avenue. For our Sunday City Park Market, no parking on Marconi Drive in areas with diagonal white parking lines. Finally, at our Tuesday Uptown Market, customers may enter the Tulane parking lot from Broadway or Leake Ave. When parking at any market, please pay attention to any nearby street signs!

We’re Hiring!

Join the Market Umbrella team and help us build a stronger food system and healthier community! We’re in the market for a full-time Vendor Support Manager to help us recruit and support vendors through outreach and direct assistance. We’re also hiring a full-time Administrative Assistant to provide office-wide support for our daily operations, and a part-time Communications Coordinator to manage our public-facing communications including social media, our website, and this newsletter! Amanda’s Fruit Specialties

Our first Vendor of the Week for Womens’ History Month is Amanda’s Fruit Specialties! Amanda has been bringing fresh juices and popsicles to the market for just under 20 years. Growing up in Nicaragua, she ate fresh fruit like papaya, coconut, and mango daily. She wanted to bring those bright seasonal tastes to New Orleans, packing a punch in her juice and ice pops. Some of Amanda’s most famed juices and popsicles include peach lemonade, watermelon lime, ginger lemonade, and her avocado cream popsicle. Catch Amanda at a Tuesday, Thursday, or occasional Sunday market to grab one of these sweet treats!

Strawberry Milk

This recipe for strawberry milk by Smitten Kitten tastes like a melted milkshake, and farm fresh milk and strawberries take this recipe to the next level. This treat is a sure bet with the little ones and will likely bring waves of nostalgia for the grow-ups, too. Grab your milk and buttermilk from T&R Dairy plus some sweet strawberries from Johndales Farm, Isabel’s Produce & Tamales, or Faust Farm and whip up a batch!
