Louisiana Shrimpers Gather to Share Tales

Area shrimpers and fishers intersted in direct marketing their products attend an information fair; the event will allow shrimpers to share new ideas involving direct marketing and food handling of wild-caught seafood.

The session is hosted by marketumbrella.org, as part of its organizational commitment to build a sustainable and equitable seafood industry. Efforts have included the traveling shrimpers "road show" called the White Boot Brigade that has taken Louisiana shrimp to chefs and media outlets in New York, San Francisco and other cities.

Go Fish Caught on Film: Since Hurricane Katrina, marketumbrella.org has been working on this project, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to assist fishers in the wake of hurricanes and invest in those who were using innovative direct marketing or piloting sustainable practices. The project paid those shrimpers a "talent" fee to capture their ideas on film, which were edited and posted on YouTube for consumers, polict makers, and other fishers to watch, The October 19th event will also be filmed.

Goodies for Seafood Vendors: Basic equipment for market or roadside stand sales will be on display; many shrimpers will receive up to $300 in free equipment. Technical assistance and information will be available at tables staffed by LSU Sea Grant, SeedCo. Financial, FedEx, Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, among others. New Orleans public markets and restaurants interested in adding local seafood vendors will also be present.
